August 1

Earth Overshoot Day

• 2018 Earth Overshoot Day fell on August 1, the earliest date since ecological overshoot begun in the early 1970s.
• It is calculated by Global Footprint
• It is the date when, humanity's annual demand on nature, exceeds what Earth can regenerate over the entire year.
• In 2018, nature’s budget for the entire year has already been used up in just span of 8 months only.

 

• It means humanity is currently using nature 1.7 times faster than Earth’s ecosystems can regenerate.
• This year the overshoot day falls two days earlier than the last year’s. Every day after August 1 will now be considered a strain on Earth’s natural resources.

 World breastfeeding week – (August 1 to 7)

• World Breastfeeding Week is celebrated every year from 1 to 7 August to encourage breastfeeding and improve the health of babies around the world.

 

• It commemorates the Innocenti Declaration signed in August 1990 by government policymakers, WHO, UNICEF and other organizations to protect, promote and support breastfeeding.
• Breastfeeding is the best way to provide infants with the nutrients they need.
• WHO recommends exclusive breastfeeding starting within one hour after birth until a baby is 6 months old.

 International Clown Week 

• International Clown Week is celebrated each year during the week of August 1-7.
• Clown groups often celebrate the week with special activities such as performing volunteer shows.

 

August 2

World Anglo Indian Day

• World Anglo Indian Day was celebrated by the Jamshedpur branch of The All India Anglo-Indian Association on August 2.

 

August 4

Friendship day

• Friendship Day in India is celebrated on the first Sunday in the month of August.
• First proposed in Paraguay in 1958, the General Assembly of the United Nations declared July 30 as the official International Friendship Day on April 27, 2011.
• But many countries, like India, celebrate it on the first Sunday of August.

 

August 5

International Forgiveness Day

• International Forgiveness Day was observed in August and sponsored by The Worldwide Forgiveness Alliance.
• It has always been observed the first Sunday in August.
• In 2018, International Forgiveness Day celebrated on August 5.

 

August 6

Hiroshima Day

• On August 6, 2018 the world witnessed 73rd anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima.
• The USA dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945, to conclude the World War II.

 

• Hiroshima Day is now a focus for anti-war and anti-nuclear discussions and demonstrations.
• Hiroshima Day also observed as Anti-Nuclear Day also called A-Bomb Day.

 

August 7

National Hand loom Day

• The National Handloom Day is being observed every year on 7 August to honour the handloom weavers in the country.
• This year it was third edition of the National Handloom Day after it was instituted in 2015.

 

• The celebration of the day seeks to highlight the contribution of handloom to the socio-economic development of the country and promote handlooms to increase income of weavers and also enhance their pride.
• The Union Government had declared 7 August as the National Handloom Day in July 2015 with the objective to generate awareness about importance of India’s handloom industry.

 

August 8

International Cat Day

• International Cat Day is a celebration which takes place on 8 August, every year.
• It was created in 2002 by the International Fund for Animal Welfare.
• World Cat Day is celebrated on 17 February in much of Europe and on 1 March in Russia.
• World Cat Day is celebrated on February 22nd in Japan.

August 9

Quit India Movement Day

• On 8 August 1942 at the All-India Congress Committee session in Bombay, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi launched the 'Quit India' movement. The next day, Gandhi, Nehru and many other leaders of the Indian National Congress were arrested by the British Government.

Nagasaki Day

• Three days later to Hiroshima bombing, on 9th August 1945 a second atomic bomb ("Fat Man") was dropped on the city of Nagasaki.

International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples

• August 9 is commemorated as the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples in recognition of the first meeting of the United Nations Working Group on Indigenous Populations in Geneva in 1982.

• 2018 Theme – “Indigenous people’s migration and movement”.
• The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted a Resolution (A/RES/71/178) on ‘Rights of Indigenous Peoples’, proclaiming 2019 as the International Year of Indigenous Languages.

 

August 10

World Bio-Fuel Day

• The World Bio-Fuel Day was observed across the world on August 10, 2018 with an aim to create awareness about non-fossil-fuels (green fuels).
• The day highlights the importance of non-fossil fuels as alternative to conventional fossil fuels and highlights the various efforts made by the Government in the bio-fuel sector.
• For the last three years in India the Union Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has been observing the World Bio-fuel Day.

 

August 11

National Daughters Day

• National Daughters Day is a day to celebrate the birth of daughters.
• Dads and moms have special relationships with their daughters and that is to be celebrated.
• The hashtag for National Daughters Day is #NationalDaughtersDay, but another popular hashtag is #Daughters.

 

August 12

International Youth Day

• International Youth Day is dedicated to celebrating young people’s contributions to conflict prevention and transformation as well as inclusion, social justice, and sustainable peace.

• 12 August was designated International Youth Day by the UN General Assembly in 1999.

 

August 13

Organ Donation Day

• Organ Donation Day is observed every year on 13th of August.
• The aim of this day is to motivate normal human beings to pledge to donate organs after death, and to spread awareness about the importance of organ donation.
• The Ministry of Health & Family Welfare of India launched the 6th World and first ever Indian Organ Donation Day and Organ Donation Congress in 2010 in New Delhi.

International Left Handers Day

• International Left Handers Day is observed annually on August 13 to celebrate the uniqueness and differences of the left handers.
• The day was first observed in the year 1976 by Dean R. Campbell, founder of the Lefthanders International, Inc.
• International Left Handers Day was created to celebrate certain people's sinistrality and raise awareness of the advantages and disadvantages of being left-handed in a predominantly right-handed world.

 

August 14

Independence Day – Pakistan

• Pakistan’s Independence Day is annually held on August 14. Pakistan celebrates the country’s independence from the British rule on that date in 1947.
• At its birth, Pakistan had two parts commonly referred to as East and West Pakistan. In 1971 East Pakistan parted from West Pakistan and became Bangladesh.

 

August 15

Independence Day - India

• Independence Day is annually observed on 15 August as a national holiday in India commemorating the nation's independence from the British Empire on 15 August 1947.
• India attained independence following an Independence Movement and civil disobedience led by the Indian National Congress (INC).
• India’s Independence coincided with the partition of India.

 

August 19

World Photography Day

• August 19 is observed as World Photography Day, which aims to inspire photographers across the planet to share a single photo with a simple purpose: to share their world with the world.

• World Photo Day originates from the invention of the Daguerreotype, a photographic process developed by Frenchmen Louis Daguerre and Joseph Nicephore Niepce in 1837.
• The first durable colour photograph was taken by Thomas Sutton in 1861.

World Humanitarian Day

• Every day, humanitarian aid workers stand on the front lines of war and disaster, braving tremendous dangers and difficulties to deliver assistance to those who need it most.
• World Humanitarian Day (WHD), which takes place every year on 19 August, recognizes the aid workers who risk their lives in humanitarian service and mobilizes people to advocate for humanitarian action.
• The day was designated by the General Assembly to coincide with the anniversary of the 2003 bombing of the United Nations headquarters in Baghdad, Iraq.
• 2018 WHD campaign: #NotATarget.

 

August 20

World Mosquito Day

• World Mosquito Day observed annually on 20 August, is a commemoration of British doctor Sir Ronald Ross’s discovery in 1897 that female mosquitoes transmit malaria between humans.

Sadbhavna Divas

• Sadbhavana Diwas is celebrated on the 20th of August every year to commemorate the birth anniversary of the erstwhile Prime Minister of India, Shri Rajiv Gandhi.
• Rajiv Gandhi was the grandson of the first Prime Minister of India, Shri Jawaharlal Nehru and son of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
• Rajiv Gandhi assumed the office of the Prime Minister upon the assassination of his mother, and was the sixth Prime Minister of India serving from a period between 1984- 1989.

Akshay Urja diwas 

• Akshay Urja diwas is an awareness campaign about the developments of renewable energy in India, celebrated on August 20 every year since 2004.
• The Indian Ministry for New & Renewable Energy Sources initiated Akshay Urja Day (Diwas) in 2004.
• The first function was organised at New Delhi in 2004 and 2005 followed repeated in Nagpur in 2006 and at Hyderabad in 2007 and Panchkula, Haryana in 2008.
• The energy such as Solar Energy, Wind energy, hydroelectrical power are few examples of Akshay Urja.

 

August 21

World Senior Citizen Day

• The World Senior Citizens Day is celebrated on 21st of August every year.
• The main aim of observing the World Senior Citizens Day is to raise awareness of the condition of elder people and support them.
• It was first announced on 14th of December in the year 1990, by the United Nations General Assembly.

International Day of Remembrance and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism

• The General Assembly established 21 August as the International Day of Remembrance and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism in order to honour and support the victims and survivors of terrorism and to promote and protect the full enjoyment of their human rights and fundamental freedoms.

World Entrepreneur’s Day

• Every year World Entrepreneurs’ Day celebrated on August 21.
• The purpose of the World Entrepreneurs’ Day is to create awareness for entrepreneurship, innovation and leadership throughout the world.
• WED is the day of founders, managers, producers, contractors, industrialists, innovators, administrators and designers.
• AIBA, the Alliance of International Business Associations invites everyone to organize happenings around the world to promote WED.

 

August – 22

Madras Day

• Madras Day is a festival organized to commemorate the founding of the city of Madras (now Chennai) in Tamil Nadu, India.

 

• It is celebrated on 22 August every year. The purchase of the village of Madraspatnam or Chennapatnam by East India Company on 22 August 1639.
• Since then, Madras Day celebrations have been held every year without fail.

 

August – 23

International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and Its Abolition

• The night of 22 to 23 August 1791, in Santo Domingo (today Haiti and the Dominican Republic) saw the beginning of the uprising in the abolition of the transatlantic slave trade.
• International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition is intended to inscribe the tragedy of the slave trade in the memory of all peoples.
• The day is designated by UNESCO to memorialize the transatlantic slave trade.

 

August 26

The World Sanskrit Day

• The Day is aimed at promoting and reviving the ancient Indian language of Sanskrit.
• It is celebrated on Sravana Poornima every year, that is the Poornima day of Sravana month in the Hindu calendar.
• Sanskrit has been known as the primary language of Hinduism and forms the basis of several other languages.
• The day is marked by various seminars and events talking about the importance of the Sanskrit language. Sanskrit Day was first celebrated in 1969.

 

August 29

International Day Against Nuclear Tests

• On 2 December 2009, the 64th session of the United Nations General Assembly declared 29 August as the International Day against Nuclear Tests.
• The resolution calls for increasing awareness and education “about the effects of nuclear weapon test or any other nuclear test and the need for their cessation as one of the means of achieving the goal of a nuclear-weapon-free world.”
• The resolution was initiated by the Republic of Kazakhstan, together with a large number of sponsors and cosponsors with a view to commemorate the closure of the Semipalatinsk Nuclear Test site on 29 August 1991.

National Sports Day

• National Sports is celebrated throughout India on August 29. This day marks the tribute to the legendary hockey players of India.

• The day also involves the celebration of Dhyan Chand, the hockey player who won gold medals in Olympics for India in the years 1928, 1932 and 1936.

Telugu Language Day 

• Telugu Language Day is observed on 29 August each year in the State of Andhra Pradesh of the Republic of India.
• This date was chosen to coincide with the birthday of the Telugu poet Gidugu Venkata Ramamurthy.
• The Government of Andhra Pradesh provides funds and presents awards with the objective of the betterment of the Telugu language.

 

August 30

The International Day of The Victims of Enforced Disappearances

• On August 30, the UN commemorates the International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances.
• The day was established by the UN General Assembly resolution 65/209 on December 21, 2010.
• Its purpose is to raise awareness of the wide range of enforced or involuntary disappearances that occur to people all over the world.

Small Industry day

• Small industry day is celebrated on 30 Aug every year in support and promotion of small Industries.
• Industry day is celebrated as a part of its effort to provide balanced growth to existing small, medium and large-scale enterprises.
• Celebrating ‘Industries Day’ will help districts exhibit their growth potential and opportunities received for their development in the year.
• Government of India in order to promote small and budding entrepreneurs decided to establish a government agency which can mediate and provide help to small scale industries (SSI).
