July 1

National Doctor’s day

• The National Doctors' Day is a day celebrated to recognize the contributions of physicians to individual lives and communities.
• The date may vary from nation to nation. It is usually celebrated by health care organizations.
• In India the National Doctors' Day is celebrated on July 1 to honour the legendary physician and the second Chief Minister of West Bengal, Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy.
• Dr Roy was honoured with the country's highest civilian award Bharat Ratna on February 4, 1961.
• Theme for 2018 is “Zero tolerance to violence against doctors and clinical establishment”.

GST Day

• The government celebrated July 1, 2018, as 'GST Day' to mark the first anniversary of the new indirect tax regime.

• Goods and Services Tax (GST) was rolled out in the intervening night of June 30 and July 1, last year, in a ceremony held in the Central Hall of Parliament.

Chartered Accountants’ day

• Chartered Accountants Day is celebrated every year on July 1 to mark the foundation day of ICAI.
• ICAI (Institute of Chartered Accountants of India) was formed in India as a result of an Act that was passed on July 1st, 1949.
• Chartered Accountant is an internationally acknowledged profession and is considered to be the first accountants to create the accounting body, and it was initially established in Scotland in 1854.

International joke day

• The 1st of July is celebrated as International Joke Day. This day is prominently for laugh out loud with your friends and dear ones.
• International Joke Day is a funny festival day that invites sharing of funny jokes, humorous videos and delightful mails.
• It is believed that the concept of joke first originated in ancient Greece by Palamedes.

Van Mahotsav (1 - 10 July)

• Van Mahotsav was launched in the year 1950 by Shri Kanhaiyalal M. Munshi, the then Union Minister for Agriculture and Food to create an enthusiasm in the popular mind for the preservation of forest and planting of trees.
• Van Mahotsav, a weeklong festival of tree planting is organised every year in the month of July all across India and lakhs of trees are planted.

SBI Day

• On July 1, 1955, the Imperial Bank of India was reconstituted by an Act of Parliament to create State Bank of India (SBI) to perform the functions of a commercial bank.
• This marked the start of a new era in banking in the country.

July 2

World Sports Journalists Day

• World Sports Journalists Day is celebrated on July 2, to mark the services of sports journalists for the promotion of sports.
• This day has been earmarked as the official day of celebration because of its significance as the date when the International Sports Press Association was established at the 1924 Paris Olympics.
• World Sports Journalists Day is celebrated to urge members of the sporting media to strive for excellence in their professional work.

World UFO (unidentified flying objects) Day

• World UFO Day is dedicated to the existence of unidentified flying objects.
• First celebrated in 2001, it was created by the World UFO Day Organization.
• The World UFO Day Organization declared July 2 to be the official day.
• July 2 marks the anniversary of the Roswell UFO incident, which also happened in 1947.

July 3

Saint Thomas day

• Thomas was born a Jew and was called to be one of the twelve Apostles.
• His birth and death dates are unknown.
• But his feast day is celebrated July 3.
• 3 July was the day on which his relics were transferred from Mylapore in India to the city of Edessa in Mesopotamia.
• He lived before the formal establishment of the Catholic Church but is recognized as the patron saint of architects.

July 4

American Independence Day

• This day marks the Declaration of Independence and the birth of the United States of America as an independent nation (July 4, 1776).

July 6

World Zoonoses Day

• world Zoonoses Day, which takes place on July 6 every year, is a day to help raise awareness of the growing risk of zoonotic diseases, which are diseases that can be spread from animals to humans.

International kissing day

• International kissing day, which takes place on July 6 every year.
• The International Kissing Day has been observed worldwide since 2006 as an annual event.
• However, the art of kissing dates back to times unknown.

July 7

World Chocolate Day

• World Chocolate Day, referred in some instances, as International Chocolate Day, is an annual observance that occurs globally on 7 July.
• Celebration of the day includes the consumption of chocolate.

International Day of Cooperatives (1st Saturday of July)

• On December 16, 1992 The United Nations General Assemblyproclaimed in resolution 47/90 "the first Saturday of July 1995 to be International Day of Cooperatives, marking the centenary of the establishment of the International Cooperative Alliance."
• Since 1995 the United Nation’sInternational Day of Co-operatives has been observed jointly alongside the International Co-operative Day.
• 2018 theme: Sustainable societies through cooperation.

July 11

World Population Day

• The world population day celebrated on 11th July 2018. It is a United Nations initiative to raise the awareness of increasing population day to day.

• In 1989 The governing council of the United Nations Development Programme recommended that 11th July should be observed as World Population Day.
• The theme for 2018 is “Family Planning is Human Right”.

July 12

International Malala Day

• Every 12 July is a UN observance called “Malala Day”.

• The day is based upon the life and struggles of Malala Yousafzai of Pakistan, who advocates for equal access to education for women.

 NABARD Foundation Day

• National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) has completed 36 years of service to the nation and celebrated the 37th Foundation Day on 12th July this year (2018).
• A national seminar on 'Collectivisation and Market linkages: Farmers Producers Organizations' was organized in Mumbai in this regard.

July 14

French National Day (Bastille Day)

• Bastille Day signalled the beginning of the French Revolution, dedicating the principles of ‘Liberty, Equality and Fraternity’ to the world.
• The French National Day is the anniversary of Storming of the Bastille Prison on 14 July 1789, a turning point of the French Revolution.

July 15

World youth skill day

• To raise awareness on the importance of investing in youth skills development, The United Nations General Assembly decided in resolution A/RES/69/145to designate 15 July as World Youth Skills Day.

Education Development Day

• The 116th birth anniversary of K.Kamaraj, former Chief Minister of Tamilnadu was celebrated on July 15 2018.
• Tamilnadu celebrates Birth anniversary of K.Kamaraj (July 15th) as 'Education Day' or 'Education Development Day'.
• Since 2006, this day is observed as Educational Development Day.

July 16

World Snake Day

• Removing people’s fears and illusions about snakes is one of the aims of World Snake Day observed across the world on July 16.
• It is celebrated by wildlife enthusiasts across the world.

July 17

International Justice Day

• World Day for Justice, also referred to as Day of International Criminal Justice or International Justice Day celebrated throughout the World on July 17 as part of an effort to recognize the emerging system of international criminal justice.
• The day July 17 was chosen because it is the anniversary of the adoption of the Rome Statute, the treaty that created the International Criminal Court.
• On 1 June 2010 at the Review Conference of the Rome Statuteheld in Kampala (Uganda), the Assembly of State Parties decided to celebrate 17 July as the Day of International Criminal Justice.

July 18

Nelson Mandela International Day

• Nelson Mandela International Day 2018 marks 100 years since the birth of Nelson Mandela (18 July 1918).
• The day was officially declared by the United Nations in November 2009, with the first UN Mandela Day held on 18 July 2010.

 

• The Nelson Mandela Foundation dedicated this year's (2018) Mandela Day to 'Action Against Poverty'.

 July 26

Kargil Vijay Diwas

• Kargil Vijay Diwas was named after the success of Operation Vijay.
• On 26 July 1999, India successfully took command of the high outposts which had been lost to Pakistani intruders.

• India increased its defence spending in the budget presented the year after the Kargil war.

International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem

• The International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem adopted by the General Conference of UNESCO in 2015 and celebrated each year on 26 July.
• It aims to raise awareness of the importance of mangrove ecosystems as “a unique, special and vulnerable ecosystem" and to promote solutions for their sustainable management, conservation and uses.

July 27

Central Reserve Police Force Foundation Day

• The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) is the largest of India's Central Armed Police Forces.
• It functions under the aegis of Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) of the Government of India.
• The CRPF's primary role lies in assisting the State/Union Territories in police operations to maintain law and order and counter insurgency.
• It came into existence as the Crown Representative's Police on 27 July 1939.
• After Indian Independence it became the Central Reserve Police Force on enactment of the CRPF Act on 28 December 1949.

July 28

World Nature Conservation Day

• World Nature Conservation Day is observed to create awareness on protecting and conserving natural resources.
• There are so many threats to nature like deforestation, illegal wildlife trade, pollution, using plastics, chemicals, and lot more.

World Hepatitis Day

• Nobel Laureate Baruch Samuel Blumberg’s birthday on July 28th was declared as World Hepatitis Day to create awareness about viral hepatitis among the common public.
• Theme of this year (2018) is: "Test. Treat. Hepatitis".
• WHO and the Government of Mongolia were hold a series of events in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia to commemorate the World Hepatitis Day 2018.
• Viral hepatitis B and C are major health challenges, affecting 325 million people globally.  They are root causes of liver cancer, leading to 1.34 million deaths every year.

July 29

International Tiger Day

• International Tiger Day has been held since 2010 when it was first created at the Saint Petersburg Tiger Summit to raise awareness about the decline of wild tiger numbers.

• Indiacounts the number of wild tigers every four year and show a promising rise from 1411 in 2006 to 2226 in 2014.
• According to WWF (World Wildlife Fund), the World Population of Tiger in 2016 was ±3900.

July 30

World Day against Trafficking in Persons

• The United Nation’s Member States adopted resolution A/RES/68/192and designated July 30 as the World Day against Trafficking in Persons.

• It aims to raise awareness of the situation of victims of human trafficking and for the promotion and protection of their rights.”
• In 2018 the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC)has chosen ‘responding to the trafficking of children and young people’ as the focus of the World Day.

International day of friendship

• The UN encourages governments, organizations, and community groups to hold events, activities and initiatives that promote solidarity, mutual understanding and reconciliation.
• The International Day of Friendship is a UN observance and not a public holiday.

July 31

World ranger day

• World Ranger Day is celebrated worldwide on July 31st to commemorate Rangers killed or injured in the line of duty.
• It is promoted by the 54-member associations of the International Ranger Federation (IRF).
• The first World Ranger Day was observed in 2007 on the 15th anniversary of the founding of the IRF.

Important festivals

Dree Festival of Arunachal Pradesh 

• The Dree Festival of Arunachal Pradeshis an agricultural festival celebrated by the Apatani tribe of Arunachal Pradesh.

• The Dree Festival is the biggest festival of the Apatanis.
• The Dree Festival of Arunachal Pradesh is celebrated on July 5 with the pre-celebration rituals starting from the evening of July 4 every year.

 

Tuluni Festival

• The most significant festival celebrated by the Sumi Naga tribe of Nagaland is the Tuluni Festival.
• Tuluni is the name of this wine that is consumed by the Sumi tribe.
• Tuluni is a harvest festival of the Sumi tribe.
• This year it was on July 8.

Pori Festival

• Pori Festival is celebrated every year in the Lahaul Valley of Himachal Pradesh.
• It is celebrated in the traditional way at the temple of Trilokinath.

Harela Mela 

• Harela Mela is a fair takes place every year from 16 July to 21 in Ramlila Ground of Bhimtal in Kumaun, Uttarakhand.

Kharchi Puja

• Kharchi Puja is one of the most popular festivals in Tripura.
• It is a week-long Puja which falls in the month of July and attracts thousands of people.
• This festival is celebrated at Agartala (Purana Agartala) in the temple premises of fourteen gods.
