June 01
World Milk Day
  • This day was founded by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).
  • India is the largest producer of milk.

  • It also celebrates National Milk Day on November 26th.
  • This day marks the birth anniversary of Verghese Kurien, the Father of White Revolution in India.
  • 2018 theme in India was– “Drink Move Be Strong.

 

Global Day of Parents 
  • The Global Day of Parents is observed on the 1st June of every year.
  • The Day was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in 2012 with resolution A/RES/66/292 and honours parents throughout the world.
  • Since the 1980s, the important role of the family has increasingly come to the attention of the international community.
  • The General Assembly adopted a number of resolutions, and proclaimed the International Year of the Family and the International Day of Families.

 

June 3
World Bicycle Day
  • On June 3, 2018, the first official World Bicycle Day was celebrated.
  • The bicycle is a symbol of sustainable transportation and conveys a positive message to foster sustainable consumption and production, and has a positive impact on climate.

  • This Day encourages Member States to adopt best practices and means to promote the bicycle among all members of society.

 

June 04
Financial Literacy Week
  • Reserve Bank of India has conducted the Financial Literacy Week from June 4 on the theme ‘Customer Protection’.
  • The week-long event is to focus on creating awareness among customers of banks.
  • According to RBI, the event emphasised on awareness about different financial products, services, digital applications and good financial practices.
  • Bankers, Financial Literacy Counsellors and other stake holders were the major participants in the event.

 

International Day of Innocent Children Victims of Aggression
  • On 19 August 1982, at its emergency special session on the question of Palestine, the General Assembly decided to commemorate 4th June of each year as the International Day of Innocent Children Victims of Aggression.
  • The purpose of the day is to acknowledge the pain suffered by children throughout the world who are the victims of physical, mental and emotional abuse.
  • This day affirms the UN's commitment to protect the rights of children.
  • Its work is guided by the Convention on the Rights of the Child.

 

June 05
World Environment Day
  • The United Nations try to create an awareness that the protection and improvement of the human environment is a major issue, which affects the well-being of peoples and economic development throughout the world.
  • For this UN designated 5 June as World Environment Day.

  • The theme for 2018, “Beat Plastic Pollution,” is a call to action for all of us to come together to combat one of the great environmental challenges of our time.
  • Every World Environment Day has a different global host country.
  • This year it is India.

 

June 08
World Oceans Day
  • The purpose of the Day is to inform the public of the impact of human actions on the ocean, develop a worldwide movement of citizens for the ocean, and mobilize and unite the world’s population on a project for the sustainable management of the world's oceans.
  • Theme: “Action focus for 2018: preventing plastic pollution and encouraging solutions for a healthy ocean”.
  • The celebrations use these hashtags in social media to help clean up our ocean: #WorldOceansDay, #SaveOurOcean.

 

World Brain Tumor Day
  • World Brain Tumor Day 2018 aims at helping brain tumor patients with medical assistance.
  • Every year, June 8 is observed as World Brain Tumor Day.

  • World Brain Tumor Day 2018 is aimed at raising awareness about brain tumor and educating people from all sections of the society about this kind of cancer which is not very common.
  • World Brain Tumor Day was started by German Brain Tumor Association, a non-profit organisation which provides all necessary information and support to brain tumor patients.
  • The association announced World Brain Tumor Day on June 8, 2000.

 

June 11
Green Mizoram day
  • The Green Mizoram Day is being organised every year on June 11 since 1999.
  • Chief Minister of Mizoram inaugurated the Green Mizoram Day, 2018 at a function attended by his cabinet colleagues, legislators and senior government officials where they undertook ceremonial planting of trees along the river Chite in Aizawl.

 

June 12
World Day Against Child Labour
  • The International Labour Organization (ILO) launched the World Day Against Child Labour in 2002 to focus attention on the global extent of child labour and the action and efforts needed to eliminate it.
  • Each year on 12 June, the World Day brings together governments, employers and workers organizations, civil society, as well as millions of people from around the world to highlight the plight of child labourers and what can be done to help them.

  • The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), adopted by world leaders in 2015, include a renewed global commitment to ending child labour.

 

June 13
International Albinism Awareness Day
  • On 18 December 2014, the General Assembly adopted a resolution proclaiming, with effect from 2015, 13 June as International Albinism Awareness Day.
  • The United Nations Human Rights Council adopted a resolution in 2013 calling for the prevention of attacks and discrimination against persons with albinism.

World Blood Donor Day
  • Every year, on 14 June, countries around the world celebrate World Blood Donor Day.
  • The event serves to thank voluntary, unpaid blood donors for their life-saving gifts of blood and to raise awareness of the need for regular blood donations to ensure the quality, safety and availability of blood and blood products for patients in need.
  • The host country for World Blood Donor Day 2018 is Greece, through the Hellenic National Blood Centre.
  • The global event was held in Athens on 14 June 2018.

 

June 15
World Elder Abuse Awareness Day
  • The United Nations General Assembly, in its resolution 66/127, designated June 15 as World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.
  • It represents the one day in the year when the whole world voices its opposition to the abuse and suffering inflicted to some of our older generations.

 

June 16
International Day of Family Remittances
  • The International Day of Family Remittances (IDFR), celebrated every year on 16 June, is aimed at recognizing the significant financial contribution migrant workers make to the wellbeing of their families back home and to the sustainable development of their countries of origin.
  • The Resolution establishing the IDFR was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on 12 June 2018 (A/RES/72/281).
  • The Day is also supported by the 22 UN organizations within the Global Migration Group (GMG), individually by IOM (International Organization for Migration) and by several member states.

 

June 17
World Father’s Day
  • Father’s Day is celebrated worldwide to recognize the contribution that fathers make to the lives of their children.
  • Although it is celebrated on a variety of dates worldwide, many countries observe this day on the third Sunday in June.

 

World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought
  • The World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought is observed every year to promote public awareness of international efforts to combat desertification.
  • The day is a unique moment to remind everyone that land degradation neutrality is achievable through problem-solving, strong community involvement and co-operation at all levels.
  • 2018 Theme “Land has true value – invest in it.”
  • The 2018 World Day to Combat Desertification campaign #2018WDCD urges you to move away from unsustainable land use.

 

June 18
Sustainable Gastronomy Day
  • The UN General Assembly adopted on 21 December 2016 in its resolution A/RES/71/246 and designated 18 June as an international observance, Sustainable Gastronomy Day.

 

Goa Revolution Day – June 18
  • The struggle which began 72 years back (in 1946) resulted in the liberation of Goa in 1961.

 

June 19
World Sickle Cell day
  • At the plenary session of the 63rd General Assembly of the United Nations on December 22, 2008, a resolution recognized ‘sickle cell anaemia as a public health problem’ and urged the Member States and United Nations organizations to raise awareness of sickle cell anaemia on June 19 of each year.
  • The first Sickle Cell Day was celebrated on June 19, 2009.

 

June 20
World Refugees day
  • It is an annual event, held on the same date each year to state that the world supports and stands with refugees.
  • 2018 is the 18th year of the event, run by the United Nations Refugee Agency.

  • The event is about raising global awareness of global responsibility for refugees.
  • 2018 Theme – “Now more than ever, we need to stand #WithRefugees”.

 

June 21
World Hydrography Day
  • World Hydrography Day, 21 June, was adopted by the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) as an annual celebration to publicise the work of hydrographers and the importance of hydrography.
  • The International Hydrographic Bureau was established in 1921.
  • In 1970 the name was changed to the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO).
  • In 2005 the IHO adopted the concept of a World Hydrography Day, which was "welcomed" by the United Nations General Assembly.

 

International Yoga Day
  • It’s a global event that takes place each year on June 21 and aims to raise awareness of the benefits of practicing yoga.
  • 2018 theme – “Yoga for Peace”.

  • On 11 December 2014, the United Nations proclaimed 21 June as the International Day of Yoga by resolution 69/131.

 

World Music Day
  • The Fête de la Musique, also known as Music Day is an annual music celebration that takes place on 21 June.

 

June 23
International Widows Day
  • The day takes place annually on 23 June.
  • International Widows Day was established by The Loomba Foundation to raise awareness of the issue of widowhood.
  • The first International Widows Day took place in 2005 and was launched by Lord Loomba and the foundation's president, Cherie Blair.

 

United Nations Public Service Day 
  • The UN General Assembly, in its resolution 57/277, designated 23 June as Public Service Day.
  • The UN Public Service Day celebrates the value and virtue of public service to the community; highlights the contribution of public service in the development process; recognizes the work of public servants, and encourages young people to pursue careers in the public sector.
  • Since the first Awards Ceremony in 2003, the United Nations has received an increasing number of submissions from all around the world.

 

Olympic Day
  • In January 1948, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) approved the idea of Olympic Day to commemorate the creation of the IOC on 23 June 1894 in Paris.
  • 2018 Olympic Day is 70th Anniversary for Olympic Day.

 

June 25
Day of the Seafarer
  • The Day of the Seafarer is being observed every year on 25 June across the world.
  • It also acknowledges the risks and personal costs endured by seafarers while being in their jobs.
  • The theme for year 2018 is ‘Seafarers wellbeing’.
  • It highlights the issues of seafarers wellbeing.
  • The Day of the Seafarer was designated by International Maritime Organisation (IMO) in 2010.

 

June 26
International Day Against Drug Abuse
  • By resolution 42/112 of 7 December 1987, the General Assembly decided to observe 26 June as the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

  • The theme for 2018 is: "Listen First - Listening to children and youth is the first step to help them grow healthy and safe."
  • The UN General Assembly held a Special Session (UNGASS) on drugs in April 2016.

 

International Day in Support of Victims of Torture
  • On 12 December 1997, by resolution 52/149, the UN General Assembly proclaimed 26 June the United Nations International Day in Support of Victims of Torture, with a view to the total eradication of torture and the effective functioning of the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment.
  • The UN Voluntary Fund for Victims of Torture, administered by the UN Human Rights Office in Geneva is a unique victim-focused mechanism that channels funding for the assistance to victims of torture and their families.
  • The UN Voluntary Fund for Victims of Torture accepts donations.

 

June 27
MSME Day
  • Micro, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs) Day is celebrated each year on 27 June.
  • MSME Day 2018 will be dedicated to youth and will cover topics such as youth entrepreneurship and youth employment.
  • MSME Day 2018 Theme – ‘The Youth Dimension’.

 

June 29
National Statistics Day
  • It is observed to create public awareness about the importance of statistics in socio-economic planning and policy formulation, and to acknowledge the contribution of Late Professor Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis.
  • 2018 Theme – “Quality Assurance in Official Statistics”.

  • The Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), set up by Prof Mahalanobis in 1931.
  • It was made as an autonomous “Institute of National Importance” through an Act of Parliament in 1959.

 

International Day of the Tropics
  • The International Day of Tropics is observed every year on 29 June across the world with an aim to raise awareness to specific challenges faced by tropical areas and far-reaching implications of issues affecting world’s tropical zone.
  • The Tropics account for 40% of world’s total surface area and are host to approximately 80% of the world’s biodiversity and also much of its language and cultural diversity.
  • The International Day of the Tropics was instituted by United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on 14 June 2016 by adopting resolution A/RES/70/267.
  • The day was proclaimed to mark anniversary of launch of ‘State of the Tropics Report’ by Nobel Laureate Aung San Suu Kyi on 29 June 2014.

 

June 30
International Asteroid Day
  • In December 2016 the United Nations General Assembly adopted resolution A/RES/71/90, declaring 30 June International Asteroid Day in order to "observe each year at the international level the anniversary of the Tunguska impact over Siberia, Russian Federation, on 30 June 1908, and to raise public awareness about the asteroid impact hazard."
  • The General Assembly’s decision was made based on a proposal by the Association of Space Explorers, which was endorsed by Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS).

 

International Day of Parliamentarism
  • For the first time, 30 June this year is celebrated as the International Day of Parliamentarism.
  • It is also the date, in 1889, on which the Inter-Parliamentary Union — the global organization of parliaments — was established.

  • This Day celebrates parliaments and the ways in which parliamentary systems of government improve the day-to-day lives of people the world over.
  • It is also an opportunity for parliaments to take stock, identify challenges, and ways to address them effectively.

 

Ambubachi Mela
  • The Ambubachi Mela is an annual Hindu mela held at Kamakhya Temple in Guwahati, Assam.
  • This yearly mela is celebrated during the monsoon season that happens to fall during the Assamese month Ahaar, around the middle of June.
  • This mela is also known as Ameti or Tantric fertility festival since it is closely associated with Tantric Shakti cult prevalent in eastern parts of India.

 

Hemis festival
  • The Hemis festival is one of the biggest and the most famous religious festivals of Ladakh and is an attraction for both the tourist and the local people.
  • The festival of Hemis is a colourful two-day affair that falls on the 10th day (called Tse-Chu in the local language) of the Tibetan lunar month.
  • This festival is a celebration of the birth anniversary of spiritual leader Padmasambhava, the founder of Tibet Tantric Buddhism.
  • The main venue and stage for this festival is the courtyard of Hemis Gompa-the biggest Buddhist monastery in Ladakh.
