September 02
World Coconut Day
  • World Coconut Day is observed on September 2 every year since 2009 to highlight the benefits of coconuts.
  • The day aims at creating awareness about the importance of the coconut and its potential to ward off various diseases and create employment.
  • World Coconut day was started by the Asian and Pacific Coconut Community (APCC) headquartered at Jakarta in Indonesia.

 

September 05
International Day of Charity
  • The International Day of Charity is observed annually on September 05.
  • It was declared by the United Nations General Assembly in 2012.
  • The prime purpose of the International Day of Charity is to raise awareness and provide a common platform for charity related activities all over the world.
  • September 5 was chosen in order to commemorate the anniversary of the passing away of Mother Teresa of Calcutta, who received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979.

 

National Teachers Day
  • Teacher’s Day is celebrated on September 05 every year in India.
  • The birth date of the second President of India, Dr.Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, September 05 has been celebrated as Teacher’s Day since 1962 in India.

 

September 07
World Beard Day
  • World Beard Day is celebrated annually on an international level with people from every nation and continent gathering together with their beards.
  • It is held on the first Saturday of September.

 

September 08
International Literacy Day
  • September 08 was declared International Literacy Day by UNESCO on 26 October 1966 at 14th session of UNESCO's General conference.
  • It was celebrated for the first time in 1967.

  • Its aim is to highlight the importance of literacy to individuals, communities and societies.
  • This year (2018), it is marked as 52nd International Literacy Day.
  • The theme announced by UNESCO for this year is `"Literacy and skills development".
  • In India to observe this day, several functions were organised by the National Literacy Mission Authority.

 

September 10
World Suicide Prevention Day
  • World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD)is observed every year on 10th September, which is organized by the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) in collaboration with the World Health Organisation (WHO).
  • The aim of this day is to create awareness among people about the fact that suicide can be prevented.
  • Suicide is the second major cause of death among young people 15-29 years of age.
  • The most common methods of suicide are ingestion of pesticide, hanging and firearms globally.
  • ‘Working Together to Prevent Suicide’is the theme of the 2018 World Suicide Prevention Day.

 

September 11
125th Anniversary of Swami Vivekananda’s Chicago speech (2018)
  • On 11th September 1893, Swami Vivekananda delivered his first speech in the Parliament of the World’s Religions in Chicago.
  • He is remembered as one of the key people who introduced philosophies such as Vedanta and Yoga to the West.

 

September 12
United Nations Day for South-South Cooperation
  • To highlight the importance of South-South Cooperation, the General Assembly in its resolution 58/220 decided to observe the United Nations Day for South-South Cooperation on 12 September every year.

  • The United Nations Day for South-South Cooperation celebrates the economic, social and political developments made in recent years by regions and countries in the south and highlights UN's efforts to work on technical cooperation among developing countries.

 

September 14
Hindi Diwas
  • Hindi Diwas is being celebrated across the country on September 14.
  • It was on this day in 1949 that the Constituent Assembly adopted Hindi written in Devanagari as the official language of the country.

 

September 15
International Day of Democracy
  • In 2007 the United Nations General Assembly adopted to observe 15 September as the International Day of Democracy with the purpose of promoting and upholding the principles of democracy and invited all member states and organizations to commemorate the day to raise public awareness.

  • 2018 Theme: Democracy under Strain: Solutions for a Changing World.
Engineer's Day
  • Engineer's Day is observed in India on September 15 in honour of Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya who was born on the day in 1860.
  • He was the chief designer of the flood protection system designed and built for the city of Hyderabad, as well as the chief engineer responsible for the construction of the Krishna Raja Sagara dam in Mysore which created the largest reservoir in Asia at that time.

 

International Red Panda Day
  • International Red Panda Day is celebrated on the third Saturday of every September and was founded by Red Panda Network to draw attention to the declining populations of red pandas.
  • There are fewer than 10,000 red pandas, meaning the endangered species faces a high risk of extinction in the wild.

 

Sanchayika Day
  • Sanchayika (school banking) Day is celebrated all over the India at 15th September in order to promote the money saving habits among students.
  • In the early 1970, there is a provision made by the Indian Government for the students to have Banking facility in the school known as the Sanchayika under the National Savings.
  • Sanchayika Scheme is a money saving system for the school students launched by the Government of India.

 

September 16
The International Day for Preservation of Ozone Layer
  • The International Day for Preservation of Ozone Layer (World Ozone Day) is observed every year on September 16 for the preservation of the Ozone Layer
  • The theme for the World Ozone Day 2018 is “Keep Cool and Carry On: The Montreal Protocol”.
  • The day was designated by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on December 19, 1994.
  • Its observance commemorates the date in 1987 on which Montreal Protocol was signed on substances that deplete the ozone layer.

 

 18th - 24th September- International Week of the Deaf
  • The International Week of the Deaf is celebrated by the World Federation of the Deaf (WFD) and its national associations and their affiliates globally. It is celebrated during September 18 to 24.

 

September 20
The International Day of University Sport 
  • In 2015, The International University Sports Federation (FISU) proposed to UNESCO to recognize internationally a day dedicated to university sport.
  • The proposal was endorsed by UNESCO’s Member States at the 38th session of the General Conference in Paris in November 2015, and 20 September was declared the International Day of University Sport.

 

September 21
International Day of Peace
  • The International Day of Peace, also known as World Peace Day, is a United Nations-sanctioned holiday observed annually on 21 September.
  • It is dedicated to world peace, and specifically the absence of war and violence.
  • The day was first celebrated in 1982.

 

World Alzheimer's Day
  • World Alzheimer’s Day is celebrated on September 21st of each year. It is a day on which Alzheimer’s organizations around the world concentrate their efforts on raising awareness about Alzheimer’s and dementia.
  • Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia.

 

September 22
World Rhino Day
  • World Rhino Day was first announced by WWF-South Africa in 2010.
  • The following year, World Rhino Day grew into an international success, encompassing both African and Asian rhino species.

  • It celebrates all five species of rhino: Black, white, greater one-horned, Sumatran and Javan rhinos.

 

World Rose Day
  • The rose is a symbol of love, care and concern.
  • On September 22 every year, Rose Day is observed, for all the people all over the world who are battling cancer.
  • The purpose of celebrating Rose Day is to remind all cancer patients that they can face this disease with their spirit and will power.

 

World Car Free Day
  • World Car Free Day, which is celebrated on September 22, encourages motorists to give up their cars for a day.
  • The first car-free day was held in February 2000.

 

September 23
International Day of Sign Languages
  • International Day of Sign Languages is celebrated annually across the world on 23 September every year.
  • This day aims to raise awareness of the importance of sign language of people who are deaf.
  • This year (2018) it was first International Day of Sign Languages.
  • Its theme was “With Sign Language, everyone is Included!”
  • United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) instituted this day by adopting resolution A/RES/72/161 in December 2017.

 

September 25
Antyodaya Diwas
  • 25th September is observed as Antyodaya Diwas every year to mark the birth anniversary of Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya (1916).
  • It was stared in the year 2014.

 

September 26
International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons
  • The International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons is observed every year on 26 September across the world.
  • The day aims to provide an occasion for world community to reaffirm its commitment to global nuclear disarmament as high priority.
  • The International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons was proclaimed by United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) by adopting resolution 68/32 in December 2013.

 

CSIR day 
  • The 76th Foundation Day of Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), the autonomous R&D organisation under the Department of Science & Technology, Government of India founded way back in 1942.
  • The research and development activities of CSIR include aerospace engineering, structural engineering, ocean sciences, life sciences, metallurgy, chemicals, mining, food, petroleum, leather, and environmental science.

 

World Contraception day
  • The World Contraception Day takes place on September 26th every year.
  • The day’s mission is to improve awareness of all contraceptive methods available.

 

September 27
World Tourism Day 
  • The United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) has celebrated World Tourism Day on September 27.
  • This date was chosen as on that day in 1970, the Statutes of the UNWTO were adopted.

  • The adoption of these Statutes is considered a milestone in global tourism.
  • The purpose of this day is to raise awareness on the role of tourism within the international community and to demonstrate how it affects social, cultural, political and economic values worldwide.
  • In 2018 the theme is "Tourism and the Digital Transformation".

 

World Maritime Day
  • The World Maritime Day (WMD) is observed every year on last Thursday of September to acknowledge the maritime industry and to highlight importance of shipping safety, maritime security and marine environment.
  • This it was observed on September 27 with theme as “IMO 70: Our Heritage – Better Shipping for a Better Future”.
  • The World Maritime Day marks date of adaptation of International Maritime Organization (IMO) Convention in 1958. The day was first observed in 1978.

 

September 28
International Day for the Universal Access to Information 
  • The International Day for the Universal Access to Information (commonly called the Access to Information Day) is an international day of recognition designated by the UNESCO General Conference to be held on September 28.
  • The day was inaugurated in November 2015 and was first held on September 28, 2016.
  • The day had been recognised as International Right to Know Day since 2002 and was developed by international civil society.

 

World Rabies Day
  • It is celebrated annually to raise awareness about rabies prevention and to highlight progress in defeating this horrifying disease.
  • September 28 also marks the anniversary of Louis Pasteur's death, the French chemist and microbiologist, who developed the first rabies vaccine.

  • The 2018 theme was ‘Rabies: Share the message. Save a life’. It is zoonotic disease.

 

Gunners Day
  • The ‘Raising Day’, which is also known as the ‘Gunners Day’, is observed on September 28 to mark the raising of the first Indian Artillery unit.
  • Artillery has been a major battle winning arm and its importance continues in the modern-day battlefield.

 

September 29
World Heart Day
  • World Heart Day is an international campaign held on September 29 to inform people about cardiovascular diseases, which are the biggest cause of death.
  • It is organised by The World Heart Foundation.

 

September 30
International Translation Day
  • The International Translation Day was observed by United Nations for first time on 30 September 2017.
  • The observance of day seeks to recognize contribution of unsung heroes behind international diplomacy who work as language professionals to facilitate dialogue and contribute to development and strengthens world peace and security.
  • The International Translation Day was instituted by United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in May 2017 by adopting resolution 71/288.

 

National Nutrition Month
  • The National Nutrition Month on September is being celebrated across the country to mark the fight against malnutrition.
  • The Women and Child Development Ministry to spread broad awareness on the issues related to malnutrition like stunting, under-nutrition, anaemia and low birth weight in children.

 

World First Aid day
  • The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies launched the World First Aid Day in 2000.
  • More than 100 societies of Red Cross and Red Crescent worldwide celebrate this day by organizing events on the second Saturday of September each year to raise public awareness about how first aid can save lives in case of crises.

 

World River’s day
  • The World Rivers Day is a celebration of the world’s waterways.
  • It is annually celebrated on the last Sunday of every September.
  • Last year, several million people across more than 60 countries celebrated the many values of waterways.

 

Regional Festivals
Solung Festival
  • One of the popular agriculture festivals, Solung is celebrated by the Adi Tribes in Arunachal Pradesh.
  • The festival is celebrated in the first week of September, after the sowing of seeds.

 

Amongmong Festival
  • Amongmong festival is a Pre-Harvest festival of the Sangam tribe who are the residents of Nagaland with the prime aim of the promotion of togetherness.

 

Paryushana 
  • Paryushana is the most important annual holy events for Jains and is usually celebrated in August or September.
  • It lasts 8 days for Swetambara and 10 days for Digambara.

 

Mim Kut Festival
  • The Mim Kut is a festival of Mizoram, India.
  • It is usually celebrated during the months of August and September, after the harvest of maize.

 

Nuakhai Festival
  • Nuakhai or Nuankhai is an agricultural festival mainly observed by people of Western Odisha in India.
  • This is the most important social festival of Western Odisha and adjoing areas of Simdega in Jharkhand.

 

Navakhana Festival
  • Navakhana Festival is a popular festival of Chhattisgarh which is celebrated every year in the month of Bhadrapad in hindi calender.
  • This festival is celebrated by all the communities and announces the harvesting of rice crop.

 

Pang Lhabsol festival
  • Pang Lhabsol festival is celebrated in Sikkim.
  • It is celebrated to offer thanks to Mount Khangchendzonga.

 

Phulaich Fair
  • The Phulaich Fair is held every year in the state of Himachal Pradesh.
  • It is held in the month of September in the Kinnaur district.
  • The Fair is basically associated with the flower watching festival in the Kinnaur Valley.

 

Bera Utsav
  • Bera Utsav is a regional festival celebrated in the Murshidabad district of the state of West Bengal.
  • The annual event is organized at the historical location of Lalbagh, which at one time was the home of the Nawabs and is located on the banks of River Bhagirathi.
  • The most important aspect of the celebration of Bera Utsav is the splendid firework display.

 

Mela Patt
  • Mela Patt, the festival of Bhaderwah, is celebrated every year to commemorate the historic meeting of Emperor Akbar and Raja Nagpal of Bhaderwah, in the16th century.
  • Mela Patt is devoted to Lord Vasuki Naag.
  • Raja Nagpal first initiated this Mela in 16th century as the ruler of Bhaderkashi.

 

Bhadrapad fair
  • The Bhadrapad fair is held in the center of the Ambaji village.
  • The village is visited by the largest number of sanghas [pilgrim groups] during the fair.
  • The Bhadrapad fair is held at Ambaji which is in the Danta Taluka of Banaskantha district, near the Gujarat-Rajasthan border.

 

Baba Sodal Mela
  • Baba Sodal Mela, Jalandhar is celebrated in the city to commemorate the death of the child deity, Sodal.
  • It is believed by the people of the city of Jalandhar that Sodal was blessed with divine powers.

 

Ladakh Festival Kashmir (25th September to 28th September)
  • Ladakh festival is celebrated every year in Leh and its villages.
  • There is dancing, singing, traditional music, people wearing colorful traditional Ladakhi dresses.

  • It comes to end at the Polo ground.
