  • Mary Kom is an Indian boxer from Manipur.
  • Mary Kom was born in Kangathei, Manipur, India on 1 March 1983.
  • The full name of Mary Kom is Mangte Chungneijang Mary Kom.
  • Her parents are Mangte Tonpa Kom and Mangte Akham Kom.
  • HerS husband is Karung Onler, a footballer.
  • She is mother of twins Rechungvar and Khupneivar (born in 2007) and son prince (born in 2013).
Education
  • She could not complete her high school education for her increasing passion for boxing.

  • But later she finished her schooling through alternative ways and even completed her graduation.
Career - Boxing
  • She started boxing in the international level only at an age of 18.
  • It’s Dingko Singh’s winning gold medal in 1997 Asian Games that became a life-changing inspiration for Mary Kom.
  • She is the only woman to become World Amateur Boxing champion for a record six times, and the only woman boxer to have won a medal in each one of the seven world championships.

  • She won 6 gold medals and one silver medal in Women's World Amateur Boxing Championships.
  • Mary won gold medal in AIBA world boxing championship in 2002, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2010 and 2018.
Awards
  • She won Arjuna Award, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shree awards in 2003, 2013 and 2006.
  • In 2009, She was awarded with the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, officially known as Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award in Sports and Games.
  • On 26 April 2016, Kom was nominated by the President of India as a member of the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Indian Parliament (from 25 April 2016 to 24 April 2022).
  • In March 2017, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India, appointed Mary Kom along with Akhil Kumar as national observers for boxing.

  • The 35-year-old boxer runs her own academy for boxing called “Mary Kom Regional Boxing Foundation” back in her homeland Manipur.
Autobiography and film
  • Her autobiography, Unbreakable, was co-authored by Dina Serto and published by Harper Collins in late 2013.
  • In 2014, Priyanka Chopra played the main role of Mary Kom in Mary Kom, a Hindi biographical film about her life. The movie is directed by Omung Kumar and was released on 5 September 2014.

  • In 2015, Kom became the first amateur to surpass several professional athletes in India in earnings, endorsements and awards.
  • She is the first amateur athlete to win the Padma Bhushan.
Her Performances
  • She made her debut in 2001 Women’s World Amateur Boxing Championship in Pennsylvania, USA and won a silver medal.
  • In 2002, she achieved gold medal in the AIBA (The International Boxing Association) championship in Antalya, Turkey.
  • She won a silver medal at the 2008 Asian Women's Boxing Championship in India and a fourth successive gold medal at the AIBA Women's World Boxing Championship in China, followed by a gold medal at the 2009 Asian Indoor Games in Vietnam.
  • In 2010, Kom won the gold medal at the Asian Women's Boxing Championship in Kazakhstan, and at the AIBA Women's World Boxing Championship in Barbados, her fifth consecutive gold at the championship.
  • In the 2010 Asian Games, she competed in the 51 kg class - the lowest in the contest - and won a bronze medal.
  • On 3 October 2010, she, along with Sanjay and Harshit Jain, had the honour of bearing the Queen's Baton in its opening ceremony run in the stadium for the 2010 Commonwealth Games of Delhi.

  • In 2011, she won gold in the 48 kg class at the Asian Women's Cup in China.
  • she is the only Indian woman boxer to have qualified for the 2012 Summer Olympics at London, competing in the 51 kg category and winning the bronze medal.
  • She is the only Indian female boxer to win a bronze medal at the Olympics.
  • She became the first Indian woman boxer to get a Gold Medal in the Asian Games in 2014 in Incheon, South Korea by defeating Kazakhstan’s Zhaina Shekerbekova in the 51 kg.
  • Also became the first Indian woman to win gold at the Asian Games which she won in 2014 in Korea.
  • Though keen on representing India at the 2016 Rio Olympics, Kom was not able to qualify for the event.
  • On 8 November 2017, she clinched an fifth gold medal (48 kg) at the ASBC Asian Confederation women’s boxing championships held at Ho Chi Minh in Vietnam.
  • She is the first Indian Woman Boxer to win Gold at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in the Women's 48 kg on 14 April 2018.
  • On 24 November 2018, she created history by becoming the first woman to win 6 World Championships, achieving this get at the 10th AIBA Women's World Boxing Championships being held in New Delhi. She defeated Ukraine’s Hana Okhota.
  • She has also been ranked as No. 1 AIBA World Women's Light Flyweight category.
