  • The State of Global Air 2024 report published by the US-based Health Effects Institute (HEI).
  • Air pollution accounted for 8.1 million deaths globally in 2021.
  • It is becoming second leading risk factor for death, including for children under five years.
  • China (2.3 million deaths) and India (2.1 million deaths) shared 55% of the world’s fatalities from air pollution in 2021.
  • Every day, 464 children under the age of five die because of air pollution in India.
  • 99% of the world’s population lives in places with unhealthy levels of PM2.5 pollution.
  • PM2.5 particles are tiny bits of pollution that can be found in the air.
  • More than 90% of deaths related to air pollution are linked to these PM2.5 particles.
