It aims to raise awareness about breast cancer, one of the most common cancers affecting women worldwide.
This month provides an opportunity to educate the public, promote early detection, and encourage fundraising for breast cancer research and treatment.
Breast cancer occurs when cells in the breast grow uncontrollably, forming a tumour.
About 25.8 per 100,000 women (age adjusted rate) and mortality rates of 12.7 per 100,000 women.
With an expected 2.3 million new cases in 2020 (11.7% of all cancer cases), it is the leading cause of global cancer incidence.
Between 1965 and 1985 there was a nearly a 50% increase of breast cancer incidence in India.
Breast Cancer Awareness Day is celebrated every year on October 13.
Theme for 2024 is No-one should face breast cancer alone.
