- The ESA’s European Space Operations Centre switched off the Gaia spacecraft’s subsystems and sent it into a ‘retirement orbit’ around the Sun.
- It was launched in 2013 and mapped the positions, distances, motions, and properties of nearly two billion stars and other celestial objects.
- It was stationed at the Lagrange point 2, around 1.5 million kilometres from the Earth.
