WHO has activated the Global Health Emergency Corps (GHEC) for the first time in response to a recent mpox outbreak.
Africa has already reported over 15,600 mpox cases and 537 deaths this year.
In 2022, WHO had classified mpox as a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC).
GHEC founded in 2023 by the WHO to address the gaps identified during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Its core strategies are case detection, contact tracing, targeted vaccination, clinical and home care, infection prevention, community engagement, and logistical support.
