- The United States has reported an outbreak of the deadly H7N9 strain of the highly pathogenic avian flu (HPAI) virus in commercial poultry.
- Avian influenza A(H7N9) is a subtype of influenza viruses that have been detected in birds in the past.
- The virus was first detected in March 2013 in China.
- This is the second outbreak since March 2017.
- H7N9 bird flu virus has proved to have a far higher death rate, killing nearly 40 per cent of the humans infected.
