- The day tries to promote the dialogue and understanding about poverty within governments and policymakers.
- On this day in 1987 over 100,000 people assembled at the Trocadero in Paris to commemorate victims of poverty, hunger, violence and fear.
- In December 1992, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) declared this day.
- The theme for this year is “Ending Social and Institutional Maltreatment Acting together for just, peaceful and inclusive societies.”
