- This day is observed in memory of the tragic Sharpeville Massacre of in South Africa.
- On that day, in 1960, the police opened fire and killed 69 people at a peaceful demonstration against the apartheid "pass laws".
- This year 2025 marks the 60th anniversary of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD).
- This landmark treaty was adopted by the UNGA on December 21, 1965.
