This day aims to raise the awareness about the significance of literacy as a fundamental human right and a matter of dignity.
The theme for 2024 is ‘Promoting multilingual education: Literacy for mutual understanding and peace’.
International Literacy Day was established by UNESCO on October 26, 1966, during its 14th General Conference.
The first celebration took place in 1967.
