Tamil Nadu is facing three primary challenges, namely the impact of the natural disasters, a rise in the number of the elderly, and the needs arising due to rapid urbanisation.
The state requested the XVI Finance Commission to make recommendations that would help the State overcome these challenges financially.
The average age of the population in Tamil Nadu stood at 36.4 years at present, which was 9.5 years higher compared to that of Uttar Pradesh.
By the time the XVI Finance Commission completes its tenure, the average age of the population in Tamil Nadu would be 38.5 years.
It would by then emerge as the State with the highest elderly population in the country.
