- Researchers have described this event as a “burp,” as the volcano expelled huge plumes of the potent greenhouse gas.
- The volcano was emitting 58 metric tonnes of methane per hour.
- Methane traps 28 times more heat than carbon dioxide over a 100-year period.
- It is the second-largest contributor to global warming.
- It is responsible for around 11% of total greenhouse gas emissions worldwide.
- Mount Fentale is not known for frequent eruptions.
- The last recorded eruption occurred in 1820.
