- It honours the birth of Dr Verghese Kurien, the visionary behind India's White Revolution.
- The day highlights the crucial role of milk in human nutrition and raises the awareness about its health benefits.
- Dr Kurien is known as the ‘Father of White Revolution in India’.
- He is famous for his ‘Operation Flood’ (1970), which is known as the world’s largest agricultural program.
- Due to his efforts, India became the largest producer of milk in 1998, surpassing the U.S.
- He is Founder Chairman of the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB).
- He also played a key role in the establishment and success of Amul Brand.
- He was honoured with awards- Padma Shri (1965), Padma Bhushan (1966), Padma Vibhushan (1999) and World Food Prize (1989).
- Every year, the first day of June is observed as World Milk Day.
