The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) was raised on January 19, 2006.
The disaster response and preparedness plan were intensified, spurred by the Yokohama Strategy Plan (1994) and the Hyogo Framework for Action (2005).
This period coincided with a string of severe natural calamities in India including the Orissa Super Cyclone (1999), the Gujarat Earthquake (2001), and the Indian Ocean Tsunami (2004).
The Disaster Management Act was enacted on December 26, 2005.
It was leading to the establishment of National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).
It is tasked with the formulating of policies, plans, and guidelines for disaster management.
