- Assam’s Legislative Assembly repealed the 1935 Act for the registration of Muslim marriages and divorces, and passed a new one to replace it.
- This 1935 Act has the scope for marriages between minors.
- The new bill is named as the Assam Compulsory Registration of Muslim Marriages and Divorces Bill, 2024.
- The registration under the new Bill is to be carried out by the Marriage and Divorce Registrar of the area concerned, who is the sub-registrar.
- The state also planned to introduce legislation to ban polygamy.
