The Protected Planet Report 2024 was released during COP16.
The global coverage of protected and conserved areas has now reached 17.6 per cent of terrestrial and inland waters and 8.4 per cent of marine and coastal areas.
This means that we have to double the protection on land and triple that in the marine areas by 2030 to meet the target.
16.64 per cent of land and inland water ecosystems, and 7.74 per cent of coastal waters and the ocean, were protected.
There are 51 countries and territories that exceed the 30 per cent target on land and 31 countries that exceed the 30 per cent target at sea.
Similarly, only a fourth of ecoregions have more than 30 per cent protection.
In case of marine protected areas, only 2.8 per cent of the ocean is in fully or highly protected marine protected areas.
Only 3.95 per cent of the area covered by protected and conserved areas are governed by Indigenous Peoples and local communities (IPLC).
