12,114 self-respect marriages have been registered in Tamil Nadu since 2018.
The Self-respect marriages, also called Suyamariyadhai Thirumanam, are generally solemnised in the absence of a priest and without following any of the traditional wedding rituals.
The registration of self-respect marriages comes under Section 7(A) of the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955.
This Section 7(A) was inserted by the Tamil Nadu Amendment Act, 1967.
