Tamil Nadu observed this day ‘Tamil Mozhi Thiyagigal Naal’ (Tamil language martyrs’ day) from 2025.
It commemorates who sacrificed their lives to protect the Tamil language in the struggle against Hindi imposition in 1939.
In 1938, the introduction of Hindi as a compulsory subject in schools for classes 6, 7, and 8 in Tamil Nadu.
It ignited a language movement that began on June 3, 1938.
During the movement Thalamuthu from Thanjavur and Natarasan from Perambur were arrested and eventually passed away.
