Temperature Drop in Atlantic Ocean

September 7 , 2024 2 hrs 0 min 21 0
  • The stretch of the central Atlantic was falling in temperatures up to 86°F near the equator.
  • Then, almost overnight, the mercury plunged to 72°F.
  • This is the warmest since 1982.
  • This cooling event sparked predictions of an “Atlantic Niña,” a climate pattern similar to the Pacific Ocean’s La Niña.
  • An Atlantic Niña could bring more rainfall to western Africa while causing less rainfall in northeastern Brazil and the Gulf of Guinea.
  • The last time this pattern was observed was in 2013.
