Threats to Temperate Rainforests

November 24 , 2024 16 hrs 0 min 10 0
  • More than 68 per cent of temperate rainforests would be lost to climate change under a ‘business-as-usual’ scenario.
  • ‘Business-as-usual’ suggests a likely outcome if no concerted efforts are taken to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
  • About two-thirds of such forests would be lost under this scenario by 2100.
  • Temperate rainforests are rare ecosystems found only in wet and cool regions.
  • They are spread over less than one per cent of the planet’s terrestrial surface and account for about 2.5 per cent global forest cover.
  • The countries with the largest temperate rainforest climate biome are Canada, the US, Chile, Japan, Australia, New Zealand and the UK.
