The United Nations Human Rights Council has adopted a resolution inking the plastic pollution, ocean protection and human right to a healthy environment, for the first time.
The resolution explicitly states that the plastic pollution, climate change and the biodiversity loss are together threatening the health of the world’s oceans — and, by extension, imperilling basic human rights.
The resolution urged all states to take decisive, coordinated action across the entire plastics life cycle - from production and consumption to disposal.
It also recognises the transboundary nature of plastic pollution, including the threat of microplastics to ecosystems and clean water.
The UN Ocean Conference in Nice, France and the final round of negotiations for a global treaty to end the plastic pollution, set to take place in Geneva are the upcoming important events regarding this subject.
