- Chagas disease, also known as American trypanosomiasis, is a potentially life-threatening illness.
- It is caused by the protozoan parasite Trypanosoma cruzi.
- It’s called a “silent and silenced disease” because most infected people show no or very mild symptoms.
- About 7 million people are infected globally, with around 10,000 deaths each year.
- The theme for 2025 is “Prevent, Control, Care: Everyone’s role in Chagas disease.”
