1 January 4 World Braille Day (Birth anniversary of Louis Braille) Purpose: To recognize the efforts of Louis Braille. Louis Braille is credited with inventing the Braille language which helps blind people to read as well as write.
2 January 6   World day of war orphans Purpose: To enable the International Community to recognise the plight of a particularly vulnerable group.
3 January 9 Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (NRI Day) Purpose: To Mark the contribution of the overseas Indian community to the development of India. The day commemorates the return of Mahatma Gandhi from South Africa in Bombay on 9 January 1915. Observed by:  Government of India
4 January 10    World Hindi Day        Purpose: To mark the first anniversary of World Hindi Conference (WHC) which was held in 1975 in Nagpur and to promote Hindi at the global stage. Observed by: Ministry of External Affairs

7 January 15 Indian Army Day Purpose: Recognition of Lieutenant General K. M. Cariappa’s taking over as the first Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army from General Sir Francis Butcher, the last British Commander-in-Chief of India, on 15 January 1949. Observed by: India

9 January 24 National girl child day Purpose: To increase the awareness among people about all the inequalities faced by the girl child in the society Observed by: India
10 January   25 National Voters Day Since 2011 Purpose: To encourage more young voters to take part in the political process Observed by: India   National Tourism Day  Purpose: To raise awareness of the importance of tourism for the country’s economy. Observed by: India
11 January 26 International Customs Day Purpose: To recognizes the role of custom officials and agencies in maintaining border security. Observed by: World Customs Organization   Republic Day, Since 1950 Purpose: To honour the Constitution of India as it came into force on the same day in the year 1960. 12 January 27 International Holocaust Remembrance Day Purpose: To commemorate the tragedy of the Holocaust that occurred during the Second World War. Observed byUNESCO

14 Jan 30 Martyrs’ Day Purpose: To honour those who lost their lives defending the sovereignty of the nation and death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. Observed by: India
15 Jan 31 Raising Day of National Disaster Response Force Purpose: To recognise the NDRF for its efforts during disaster response. Observed by: Government of India
16 January 11th – 17th Road safety week Purpose: To enlighten people on road safety, driving rules and cautions. Observed by: The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways
17 Last Sunday of January World Leprosy Day Purpose: To increase the public awareness of the Leprosy or Hansen’s Disease. Observed by: NGOs
