Asian Para Games 2023 - India

• The Asian Para Games 2023 are taking place in Hangzhou, China, from October 22 to 28.
• India has dispatched its largest-ever contingent to the fourth edition of the Asian Para Games.
• It was consisting of 303 athletes, including 191 men and 112 women.
• This marks a notable increase from the 190 athletes India sent to the 2018 Asian Para Games.
• They delivered their best-ever performance in 2018, clinching 72 medals including 15 gold.
• In 2023, India finished fifth in the medal count, trailing China (521:214 Gold, 167 Silver, 140 Bronze), Iran (44 Gold, 46 Silver, 41 Bronze), Japan (42,49,59) and Korea (30,33,40).

• The first Para Asian Games were held in Guangzhou, China, in 2010.
• In this, India was finishing 15th with 14 medals including one gold.
• India finished the Asian Para Games 2023 with a best-ever medal tally of 111 medals - 29 gold, 31 silver and 51 bronze.
• Indian para-athletes continued to shine at the fourth Asian Para Games in Hangzhou.
• India crosses the coveted 100 medal mark with the 26^th gold clinched by Dilip Gavit in the men’s T-47 400m event.
• Earlier, India overtook its best-ever gold medal tally in the Asian Para Games, going past its numbers from 2018.

• The Indian athletes had finished their Asian Para Games 2023 campaign in Hangzhou, the People’s Republic of China, with 111 medals - 29 gold, 31 silver and 51 bronze.
• Besides the medals, Indian para-athletes also broke three world records in Hangzhou.
• Two of these came in javelin throw disciplines in athletics.
• Gurjar Sundar Singh set a new world mark in the men's javelin throw-F46 discipline with a gold medal-winning 68.60m effort.

• While Sumit Antil set a new world record in the men's javelin throw-F64 with a 73.29m attempt.
• The men's compound team accounted for the third world record with a score of 158.
• India finished 15th and eighth in the 2014 and 2018 tournaments, respectively.
• The only time India had won 100 medals in a major international multi-sport event (Olympics, Asian Games, and Commonwealth Games) was at the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games.
• With 21, including four gold medals, Indian shuttlers came in second.
• Chess and archery each received eight medals, while shooting received six.
• On the final day, India collected 12 medals, including four gold.
• Chess won seven medals, athletics won four, and rowing won one.
• Neeraj Yadav won a gold medal in men's javelin throw F55, setting a Games record of 33.69m.

• In the same event, compatriot Tek Chand won bronze with a personal best of 30.36m.
• Dilip Mahadu Gaviot won the men's 400m T47 competition in 49.48 seconds, adding another gold medal to his collection.
• Pooja then won the final athletics medal, a bronze medal in the women's 1500m T20 race in 5:38.81s.
• Chess players saved the best for last with a seven-medal assault on the last day, including two gold medals.

• Satish Inani Darpan won gold in the men's individual rapid VI-B1 event.
• While Pradhan Kumar Soundarya and Ashwinbhai Kanchanbhai Makwana took silver and bronze, respectively.
• The trio also won the team gold medal.
• Kishan Gangoli finished third in the men's individual rapid VI-B2/B3 event.
• In the same event, Gangoli, Somendra, and Aryan Balchandra Joshi won bronze as a team.
• In the women's fast VI-B1 team event, Vruthi Saganlal Jain, Himanshi Bhavesh kumar Rathi, and Sanskruti Vikas More won bronze.
• Anita and Konganapalle Narayana earned a silver medal in the PR3 mixed double sculls event, giving India its lone medal in rowing.
• India sent 313 competitors to the Hangzhou Para Asian Games, the most in any edition, including 51 Tokyo Paralympians.
• India competed in 17 of the 22 sports, including rowing, canoeing, lawn bowl, taekwondo, and blind football for the first time.
• The Hangzhou Asian Para Games include nearly 4,000 participants from 43 countries participating in 566 gold-medal events across 22 sports.
• The Hangzhou Asian Para Games were initially slated for October 9-15, 2022.
• But it was pushed back a year because of the COVID-19 epidemic.

India's Day-wise medal winners

• Indian contingent kickstarted its Asian Para Games 2023 on a bright note.
• India kicked things off with a silver medal in the women's canoe VL2 event.
• Para athlete Prachi Yadav became the first medalist for India at the Para Asian Games with a time of 1:03.147.

• Soon, more medals followed as 29-year-old Pranav Soorma broke the Asian Para Games record with an effort of 30.01m to clinch the gold with Dharambir (28.76m) and Amit Kumar (26.93m) clinching silver and bronze, respectively.
• Besides that, three Indians also finished 1-2-3 in the Men's high jump T63 Category but as per Asian Paralympic Committee (APC) rules, only gold and silver are awarded.
• Shailesh Kumar grabbed the gold with an Asian Para Games record jump of 1.82m while Mariappan Thangavelu (1.80m) clinched silver.
• Nishad Kumar won India's third gold of the day in men's high jump T47 class as he cleared a height of 2.02m while compatriot Ram Pal took the bronze with an effort of 1.94m.

• India's fourth gold came from para shooter Avani Lekhara.
• Avani broke the Games record of 247.0 in the Women's 10m Air Rifle Stand SH1 Final as she recorded 249.6 points.
• In the men's 5000m-T11 category, India's Ankur Dhama grabbed the fifth gold of the day at the Asian Para Games.
• The canoeist Prachi Yadav and quarter-miler Deepthi Jeevanji clinched a gold each as India's medal rush continued.
• It was Prachi's second medal, following a silver the previous day.
• And her husband Manish Kaurav too bagged a canoe bronze.
• Sharath Makanahalli Shankarappa later won gold in the Men’s 5000m-T13 category to raise India’s gold medal tally to nine.

• But it was India’s Neeraj Yadav, Yogesh Kathuniya and Muthuraja.
• Muthu swept Gold in the men’s discus throw-F54/55/56.
• With this, India stood with 10 gold medals.
• Sharath Shankarappa Makanahalli's gold was initially counted and included in India's medal tally.
• But the number of India's gold medals was reduced to nine as there were only two competitors in the event.
• Under the Asian Paralympics Committee rulebook, it is up to the technical delegate to award medals in cases where there are fewer than three competitors.
• On Day 3, India bagged a whopping 30 medals.
• And all the six-gold coming from athletics.
• Reigning Paralympics champion Sumit Antil bettered his own javelin throw F64 world record with a stunning 73.29m effort on way to winning gold.

• Another Indian, Pushpendra Singh, won the bronze medal with a throw of 62.06m.
• Ankur Dhama became the first Indian to win two gold medals in a single edition of the Asian Para Games.
• He had also won a gold in men's T11 5000m race.
• Day 4 was a historic one for India, as the country went past the 72-medal mark with ease.
• It is making India's most medals at any Asia Para Games edition ever.
• The day ended with India aggregating 82 medals.
• India won three gold, and 18 medals overall.
• Sachin Sarjerao Khilari won the first gold of the day in men's F46 shot put with a Games record throw of 16.03m while Rohit Kumar took the bronze with 14.56m.

• Para shooter Sidhartha Babu then bagged another gold in R6 mixed 50m rifle prone SH1 event.
• The compound mixed team of Sheetal Devi and Rakesh Kumar won a gold after defeating their Chinese counterparts Lin Yueshan and Ai Xinliang.
• On Day 5, the penultimate day, India bagged 17 medals, including seven gold.
• It took India its tally to 99.
• Para-archer Sheetal Devi clinched the women's individual compound gold.
• Reigning Paralympic champion shuttler Pramod Bhagat too secured a gold medal in the single SL3 category.
• Tokyo Paralympics silver medalist IAS officer Suhas Lalinakere Yathiraj bettered his bronze from the last edition by winning gold in the SL4 final.

• On the sixth and final day of the event, India added 12 medals, including four gold.
• Seven medals came from chess, four from athletics and one from rowing.
• Neeraj Yadav began the day for India with a gold in men's javelin throw F55.
• Compatriot Tek Chand clinched a bronze with a personal best of 30.36 m in the same event.
• Dilip Mahadu Gavit added another athletics gold winning the men's 400m T47 race with a time of 49.48 seconds.

• The chess players saved the best for the last with a seven-medal day, including two gold.
• India swept all the three medals in men's individual rapid VI-B1 event with Satish Inani Darpan winning gold.
• While Pradhan Kumar Soundarya and Ashwinbhai Kanchanbhai Makwana bagged silver and bronze respectively.
• The trio also bagged the team gold.
• Barring these, Indian athletes also rewrote several Asian and Games records at the Hangzhou meet.
