  • The National Sports Awards 2018 were announced by the Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports on September 20, 2018.
  • The awards are annually presented on the National Sports Day of India which is celebrated on 29 August, the birthday of legendary hockey star Dhyan Chand.
  • But this year it has been postponed because of the Asian games, since the sports ministry indicated that outstanding performances at the Asian games will also be considered.
  • Cricket captain Virat Kohli and world champion weightlifter Mirabai Chanu will jointly be conferred with Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award 2018, India’s highest sporting honour.
  • This year, the Ministry received a large number of nominations for these awards.
  • The nominations were considered by the Selection Committees consisting of a former Olympian, Arjuna Awardees, Dronacharya Awardees, Dhyan Chand Awardees, Sport Journalists, Experts and sports administrators.

Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna 2018 recipients

  • Kohli will become the 3rd Indian cricketer after legendary Sachin Tendulkar (1997) and the former Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni (2007) to receive the award.

  • The Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna is the highest sporting honour of India.
  • The award is named after Rajiv Gandhi, former Prime Minister of India who served the office from 1984 to 1989.
  • The recipient(s) is/are selected by a committee constituted by the Ministry and is honoured for their "most outstanding performance in the field of sports over a period of four years" at international level.
  • The award comprises a medallion, a citation, and a cash prize of Rupees 7.5 lakh.

  • The Dronacharya Award honours the sports coaches of India.
  • The award is named after Drona, often referred as "Dronacharya" or "Guru Drona", a character from the Sanskrit epic Mahabharata of ancient India.
  • Recipients are selected by a committee constituted by the Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports and are honoured to have done "outstanding and meritorious work on a consistent basis and enabled sportspersons to excel in international events" over a period of four years.
  • The award comprises a bronze statuette of Dronacharya, a certificate, ceremonial dress, and a cash prize of Rupees 5 lakh.

  • The Arjuna Awards are given by the Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports to recognize outstanding achievement in National sports.

  • The Dhyan Chand Award is the lifetime achievement sporting honour of India.
  • The award is named after Dhyan Chand, an Indian field hockey player.

  • Recipients are selected by a committee constituted by the the Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports and are honoured for their contributions to sports both during their active sporting career and after retirement.
  • The award comprises a statuette, a certificate, ceremonial dress, and a cash prize of Rupees 5 lakh.

Maulana Abul Kalam Azad (MAKA) Trophy 2017-18

  • The Guru Nanak Dev University of Amritsar was chosen as the recipient of the Maulana Abul Kalam Azad (MAKA) Trophy 2017-18.
  • The Maulana Abul Kalam Azad (MAKA) is awarded to the overall top performing university in inter-university tournaments.

  • The overall top performing university is awarded with the MAKA Trophy, award money of Rs 10 lakh and a certificate.
