List of Indian state Flags

  • As of 2023, there are no officially recognised flags for the individual states or union territories of India.
  • No legal prohibitions to prevent states adopting distinctive flags exist in either the Emblems and Names (Prevention of Improper Use) Act, 1950, or the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971.
  • In a 1994, there was case in this regard, before the Supreme Court of India, S. R. Bommai vs. Union of India.
  • In this, the Supreme Court declared that there is no prohibition in the Constitution of India for a state to have its own flag.
  • However, a state flag should not dishonor the national flag.
  • The Flag code of India also permits other flags to be flown with the Flag of India, but not on the same flag pole or in a superior position to the national flag.

Former official state Flags

  • The state of Jammu and Kashmir had an officially recognised state flag between 1952 and 2019 under the special status granted to the state by Article 370 of the Constitution of India.

Tamil Nadu

1970

  • Grey flag with the flag of India in the canton and the Emblem of Tamil Nadu in the fly.
  • The Government of Tamil Nadu proposed a design for the Flag of Tamil Nadu in 1970.
  • The Government of Karnataka proposed a design for the Flag of Karnataka in 2018.
  • It is based on the traditional yellow-red Kannada bicolor.
  • The new tricolor flag is with the central white band and emblem.
  • It was designed to distance itself from regional political parties and emulate the structure of the Indian Tricolor
  • In August 2019, the Government of Karnataka announced it was no longer officially pursuing the proposal for an official state flag.

List of Indian state mottos

  • 6 states have adopted their own state mottos, while 20 states and 6 union territories use national motto of India as their state mottos.
  • Goa had motto of (Sanskrit - Sarve bhadrāipaśyantumākaściddukhamāpnuyāt), May everyone see goodness, may none suffer any pain.
  • Maharashtra had motto of (Sanskrit - Pratipaccandralēkhēvavardhiṣṇurviśvavanditāmahārāṣṭrasyarājyasyamudrābhadrāyarājatē), The glory of Maharashtra will grow like the first day moon.
  • It will be worshipped by the world and will shine only for the well-being of people.

  • Manipur had the motto in Meitei language.
  • It is (Kanglasha) The Dragon Lord.
  • Sikkim has Tibetan motto Kham-sum-wangdu which means Conqueror of the three worlds.
  • Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Odisha, Punjab, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Tripura, Uttarakhand and West Bengal states are accepted the motto of Truth alone triumphs.
  • All Union territories had the motto of Truth alone triumphs.
  • 2 states (Bihar and Uttar Pradesh) and 2 union territories (Chandigarh and Lakshadweep) have no official state mottos.
  • Some of these states and territories have adopted anthems or songs for the use at state functions and ceremonies.
  • In other states, songs have been proposed or are in popular, traditional or unofficial use.
