The Hindu newspaper – Early years

  • The Hindu is an Indian daily newspaper, headquartered at Chennai.
  • The Hindu was founded in Madras on 20 September 1878 as a weekly newspaper, by what was known then as the Triplicane Six.

  • It was consisting of 4 law students and 2 teachers - T. T. Rangacharya, P. V. Rangacharya, D. Kesava Rao Pantulu and N. Subba Rao Pantulu, led by G. Subramania Iyer (a school teacher from Tanjore district) and M. Veera raghavacharyar, a lecturer at Pachaiyappa's College.
  • Subramania Iyer became the first editor and Veera Raghavacharya, the first managing director of the newspaper.
  • About 100 copies of the inaugural issue were printed at Srinidhi Press, Georgetown.

  • The Hindu became, in 1995, the first Indian newspaper to offer an online edition.

1883 – 1904

  • The paper became a tri-weekly in 1883 and an evening daily in 1889.
  • A single copy of the newspaper was priced at four annas.
  • After 1887, when the annual session of Indian National Congress was held in Madras, the paper's coverage of national news increased significantly.
  • The partnership between Veeraraghavachariar and Subramania Iyer was dissolved in October 1898.

  • Iyer quit the paper and Veeraraghavachariar became the sole owner and appointed C. Karunakara Menon as editor.

1905 – 1925

  • In 1905, The Hindu, with a circulation of 800 copies, is bought by S. Kasturiranga Iyengar.
  • In 1923, The Hindu becomes the first newspaper to acquire a rotary press.
  • In 1923 Kasturiranga Iyengar passes away in December.

  • In 1925 Mahatma Gandhi unveils a portrait of Kasturiranga Iyengar in The Hindu’s office.

1926 – 1940

  • In 1933 The Hindu offices are opened in London, Bombay and Calcutta.
  • In 1934 Kasturi Srinivasan becomes the paper’s Editor. He was the founder – Chairman of the Press Trust of India and was awarded the Padma Bhusan in 1956.
  • In 1936 The Hindu illustrated, Sunday paper in broadsheet format, is launched.

  • In 1939 The Hindu acquires all India rights to carry material published in The Times, The Manchester Guardian and others, a first for an Indian newspaper.
  • The Hindu becomes the first Indian newspaper to have a P & T teleprinter link.
  • In 1940 The Hindu Transforms into a morning daily.

1941 – 1965

  • In 1947 The Hindu starts transportation of copies to other cities by air. Sport and pastime, a weekly sports magazine which also featured entertainment, is launched.
  • In 1959 Kasturi and Sons Ltd is registered and becomes an unlisted public limited company.
  • In 1963 The Hindu becomes the first Indian newspaper to acquire a Heron aircraft for the supply of papers to other cities in madras and Mysore states. In the following year, the company acquires Dakotas to supply newspapers to Kerala and Andhra Pradesh.
  • In 1965 The Times (of London) rates The Hindu as one of world’s best newspapers, calling it “a national voice with a southern accent”. G. Kasturi, who went on to become the paper’s longest serving editor, was appointed as Editor in August, 1965.

1966 – 2000

  • In 1968 The Hindu is honoured with the “World Press Achievement Award”.
  • In 1970 the Bangalore edition is launched, the first outside of madras state.
  • In 1986 the Delhi edition is launched. Pages are transmitted from madras via satellite.
  • In 1995 The Hindu becomes the first Indian newspaper to have an internet edition.

2001 – till recently

  • In 2005 The Hindu undergoes a comprehensive redesign by the renowned Mario Garcia.
  • In 2006 The Hindu e-paper is launched.
  • In 2013 The Hindu centre for politics and public policy is launched.
  • In 2015 the Mumbai edition of The Hindu is launched.
  • During the 2015 South Indian floods, for the first time since its founding in 1878, the newspaper did not publish a print edition in Chennai market on 2 December, as workers were unable to reach the press building.
  • In 2016 thehindu.com, recently redesigned, wins gold for the best news website at WAN – IFRA’s South Asian Digital Media Awards.
  • In 2018 The Hindu launches Briefcase, a paid app.

  • As of March 2018, it is published from 21 locations across 11 states: Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Thiruvananthapuram, Vijayawada, Kolkata, Mumbai, Coimbatore, Madurai, Noida, Visakhapatnam, Kochi, Mangaluru, Tiruchirappalli, Hubballi, Mohali, Allahabad, Kozhikode, Lucknow, Cuttack and Patna.
