‘Crime in India’ report - National Crime Records Bureau

  • It is the annual report of the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB).
  • Overall, 2021 saw a 7.6 per cent decline in the number of crimes registered, as compared to 2020.
  • The crime rate per lakh population declined from 487.8 in 2020 to 445.9 in 2021.
  • Uttar Pradesh saw the highest number of deaths (24,711) in traffic accidents.
  • A maximum number of Road accident cases were reported in Tamil Nadu.
  • Suicide rate was 20 deaths per million population (the highest level ever recorded)
  • Daily wage earners remained the largest profession-wise group among suicide victims in 2021.
  • The overall share of “Persons engaged in the farming sector” among the total recorded suicides stood at 6.6 per cent during 2021
  • Maximum number of suicides occurred in Maharashtra (22207).
  • Tamil Nadu (18,925), Madhya Pradesh (14,965) and West Bengal (13,500) follows the suicide list.
  • Jammu and Kashmir registered the most Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) cases.
  • Jharkhand and Maharashtra filed the highest cases of communal riots last year.
  • The rate of crime against women (the number of incidents per 1 lakh population) increased from 56.5 per cent in 2020 to 64.5 per cent in 2021.
  • Amongst the majority of the crimes against women, 31.8 per cent were cases registered under ‘cruelty by husband or his relatives’, 20.8 per cent cases were ‘assault on women with intent to outrage her modesty’, kidnapping and abduction accounted for 17.6 per cent cases and 7.4 per cent were rapes.
  • The report places Uttar Pradesh on top (56,083) in terms of the actual number of cases registered in 2021.
  • It is followed by Rajasthan (40,738) and Maharashtra (39,526).
  • Nagaland stood out with the lowest number of crimes against women registered in the past three years.
  • Delhi is the most unsafe metropolitan city.
  • It is followed by Mumbai (12.76 per cent) and Bengaluru (7.2 per cent).
  • Rajasthan reported the highest number of rape cases
  • Only 507 cases were registered in the country under the Domestic Violence Act in 2021, showing an under-reporting of cases.
