- The Maharashtra state government announced a 1% reservation in the open category for orphans in the state.
- Maharashtra is the first state to bring such a policy.
- The reservation is termed parallel reservation. Parallel reservation means, of the total jobs available under the general category, 1% will be reserved only for orphans.
- The move will help orphans who are unable to establish their castes.
