100th Year of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU)

  • PM Modi released postal stamp to mark the centenary celebrations of Aligarh Muslim University.
  • This is the first time PM Modi participated in a programme of the Aligarh Muslim University in the Uttar Pradesh.
  • Also, it was the first time in the history of five decades when a prime minister was attending an event of this university as a chief guest.
  • The last prime minister to attend any such event at AMU was Lal Bahadur Shastri in the year 1964.
  • PM Modi lauds AMU as ‘mini-India’.
  • AMU became a University in 1920 through an Act of Indian Legislative Council.
  • It elevated the status of the Mohammedan Anglo Oriental (MAO) College to the status of a Central University.
  • MAO College was set up in 1877 by Sir Syed Ahmad Khan.
  • After that the college came to be known as the Aligarh Movement.
  • It pushed the need for establishing a modern education system for the Indian Muslim populace.
  • It has three off-campus centres in Malappuram (Kerala), AMU Murshidabad centre (West Bengal), and Kishanganj Centre (Bihar).
