- The Senate voted 50-48 to confirm him, which made it the closest Supreme Court confirmation vote since 1881.
- Chief Justice John Roberts administered the constitutional oath, and retired Justice Anthony Kennedy administered the judicial oath.
- He replaces Justice Kennedy, who was nominated to the Court by President Reagan in 1987.
