- INS Trishul's visit to Durban of South Africa is to commemorate several historic events.
- It includes the 30th anniversary of the restart of India-South Africa diplomatic relations.
- It also marks the incident, 130 years ago when Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, was evicted from a train in Pietermaritzburg Station.
- Gandhi arrived in Durban in 1893 to serve as legal counsel to merchant Dada Abdulla.
- On June 7, 1893, during a trip to Pretoria in the Transvaal, he first arrived at Pietermaritzburg Railway station.
- He was seated in a first-class compartment after having purchased a ticket.
- But he was later thrown off from the compartment at the directive of a European.
- During that days, 'coolies' and non-whites were not permitted in first-class compartments.
- The incident is considered to be the trigger which led to Gandhi's fight against racial oppression and the birth of Satyagraha.
