- A Japanese rocket lifted off the United Arab Emirates’ first locally made satellite, the KhalifaSat Earth observation satellite, into orbit.
- The launch was done by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries from the Tanegashima Space Centre.
- The rocket named as H-2A, also carried an Ibuki-2 greenhouse gas observation satellite for Japan.
- UAE aims to send its first two astronauts to the International Space Station in 2019.
- It also aims to send a probe on its way to Mars in 2020 and to build a science city there by 2117.
