  • The World Rabies Day is observed on 28 September to raise awareness about rabies disease and its preventable measures.
  • The theme of the day, 2017 is ‘Rabies: Zero by 30’.
  • Rabies is a viral disease that causes inflammation of brain (acute encephalitis) in warm-blooded animals. It is zoonotic disease i.e. transmitted from one species to another, commonly by bite from infected animal such as dogs to humans.
  • The rabies virus infects central nervous system (CNS) and ultimately causes disease in brain and death.
