The World Rabies Day is observed on 28 September to raise awareness about rabies disease and its preventable measures.
The theme of the day, 2017 is ‘Rabies: Zero by 30’.
Rabies is a viral disease that causes inflammation of brain (acute encephalitis) in warm-blooded animals. It is zoonotic disease i.e. transmitted from one species to another, commonly by bite from infected animal such as dogs to humans.
The rabies virus infects central nervous system (CNS) and ultimately causes disease in brain and death.
