- The United Nations Conference on the Human Environment was held in Sweden’ Stockholm between June 5 to June 16, 1972.
- 122 countries participated in the conference.
- It was the first such worldwide convergence on planetary environment, with the theme ‘Only One Earth’.
- 70 out of 122 participant countries, which were developing and poor countries, adopted the Stockholm Declaration.
Significance
- Until 1972, no country had an environment ministry.
- Initially, Norway and Sweden set up their ministries for the environment.
- India set up its ministry of environment and forest in 1985.
