The All India Presiding Officers’ Conference (AIPOC), the apex body of the Legislatures in India, is celebrating its hundred years in 2021.
The first Conference was also held in Shimla in 1921.
Legendary parliamentarian Vithalbhai Patel, brother of Sardar Vallabhai Patel was the first Indian to be elected as presiding over of the Central Legislative Assembly in 1925.
The historic bill to give the right to franchise to women in India was also passed in this House.
The bill was moved by Moti Lal Nehru and seconded by Lala Lajpat Rai in 1925.
Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker M. Appavu questioned why the President does not provide reasons for withholding assent and returning a Bill passed by the State Assembly.
Pointing to (some) Governors sitting on the Bills passed by the Assembly, he called for setting a binding time frame for deciding on any Bill.
