Gharials Conservation in Odisha

- Odisha has renewed its effort to revive the population of critically endangered “gharials” in their natural habitat.
- It has released five reptiles, fitted with radio transmitters, into the Satkosia gorge of Mahanadi which is the southernmost limit of gharials’ home range in India.
- Compared to alligators and crocodiles, a gharial has a very long and narrow snout.
- Three Species of crocodilians are found in India are
- Gharial (Or freshwater crocodile)
- Saltwater crocodile
- Mugger crocodile
- Odisha is the only State in India having all three species.
