Gharials Conservation in Odisha

  • Odisha has renewed its effort to revive the population of critically endangered “gharials” in their natural habitat.

  • It has released five reptiles, fitted with radio transmitters, into the Satkosia gorge of Mahanadi which is the southernmost limit of gharials’ home range in India.
  • Compared to alligators and crocodiles, a gharial has a very long and narrow snout.
  • Three Species of crocodilians are found in India are
    • Gharial (Or freshwater crocodile)
    • Saltwater crocodile
    • Mugger crocodile
  • Odisha is the only State in India having all three species.
