Odisha has renewed its effort to revive the population of critically endangered “gharials” in their natural habitat.
It has released five reptiles, fitted with radio transmitters, into the Satkosia gorge of Mahanadi which is the southernmost limit of gharials’ home range in India.
Compared to alligators and crocodiles, a gharial has a very long and narrow snout.
Three Species of crocodilians are found in India are
Gharial (Or freshwater crocodile)
Saltwater crocodile
Mugger crocodile
Odisha is the only State in India having all three species.
