International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples is celebrated annually on 9 August.
The day aims to protect the rights of indigenous peoples and recognize the contributions that indigenous people make to improve world issues such as environmental protection.
It was first pronounced by the General Assembly of the United Nations in December 1994.
Indigenous people make up less than 5 per cent of the world's population, but account for 15 per cent of the poorest.
They speak an overwhelming majority of the world’s estimated 7,000 languages and represent 5,000 different cultures.
This year’s observance (2019) is dedicated to Indigenous Peoples’ Languages in view of 2019 being marked as the International Year of Indigenous Languages.
