Assembly Speaker K.R. Ramesh Kumar disqualified 14 rebel MLAs barring them to contest by-polls till the end of the tenure of the present Assembly (2023).
Overall, the speaker disqualified 13 form Congress, 3 from JDS and 1 independent - totalling into 17 MLAs.
With this, the effective strength of the 225-member Assembly has been reduced to 208. The half-way mark is 105.
These MLAs are barred from contesting the by-elections as well.
It also means that the new Karnataka CM cannot accommodate the rebel MLAs in his cabinet.
