India celebrates National handloom Day on August 7th of every year.
The first such day was celebrated on August 7th, 2015.
August 7 was chosen so as to commemorate Swadeshi Movement which was launched on 07.08.1905 in Calcutta Town Hall to protest against the partition of Bengal by the British government.
The day is celebrated to honour the handloom weavers in the country, increase the income of weavers and also highlight handloom industry’s contribution to Indian economy.
The 2019 main event of National Handloom Day will be held in Bhubaneswar, Odisha.
