Government hospitals in Tamil Nadu will celebrate the birth anniversary of Dr. Muthulakshmi Reddy on July 30 as ‘Hospital Day’ every year.
A native of Pudukkottai, she was one of the country's prominent woman doctors in the early 20th century and the State's first woman legislator.
She also founded the Adyar Cancer Institute in 1954 at Chennai.
The day is also celebrated to publicise services offered by the hospitals besides appreciating NGOs, donors, social institutions and corporates offering corporate social responsibility (CSR) funds.
Government of India conferred on her Padma Bhushan in 1956.

She was the prime mover behind the legislation that abolished the Devadasi system (bill introduced in 1930 but abolished in 1947).
