- Iraq’s parliament has passed a bill criminalising same-sex relations, which will receive a sentence of up to 15 years in prison.
- Transgender people will be sentenced to three years’ jail under the amendments to a 1988 anti-prostitution law.
- A previous draft had proposed capital punishment for same-sex relations.
- The new amendments enable courts to sentence people engaging in same-sex relations to between 10 to 15 years in prison.
- There is also a Minimum seven-year prison term for “promoting” same-sex relations.
