The Tamil Nadu Assembly adopted a Bill (Tamil Nadu Universities Laws Amendment Act, 2022) to empower the state government to appoint vice-chancellors in the state.
The authority so far had rested with the Governor.
It covers 12 universities in the state.
A separate Bill is to amend the Chennai University Act, 1923.
The Governor is the Chancellor of 13 universities in the state, with the Higher Education Minister being the Pro-Chancellor.
In Gujarat, only the chief minister has had this power since 1949.
A similar bill was passed last year in Maharashtra on this matter.
Same was the case with other states including Telangana and Karnataka.
In 2019, the West Bengal government took away the Governor’s this authority.
