- The Tamil Nadu Assembly adopted a Bill (Tamil Nadu Universities Laws Amendment Act, 2022) to empower the state government to appoint vice-chancellors in the state.
- The authority so far had rested with the Governor.
- It covers 12 universities in the state.
- A separate Bill is to amend the Chennai University Act, 1923.
- The Governor is the Chancellor of 13 universities in the state, with the Higher Education Minister being the Pro-Chancellor.
- In Gujarat, only the chief minister has had this power since 1949.
- A similar bill was passed last year in Maharashtra on this matter.
- Same was the case with other states including Telangana and Karnataka.
- In 2019, the West Bengal government took away the Governor’s this authority.
- Punchhi Commission in 2007 also recommended this.
