  • The Tamil Nadu Assembly adopted a Bill (Tamil Nadu Universities Laws Amendment Act, 2022) to empower the state government to appoint vice-chancellors in the state.
  • The authority so far had rested with the Governor.
  • It covers 12 universities in the state.
  • A separate Bill is to amend the Chennai University Act, 1923.
  • The Governor is the Chancellor of 13 universities in the state, with the Higher Education Minister being the Pro-Chancellor.
  • In Gujarat, only the chief minister has had this power since 1949.
  • A similar bill was passed last year in Maharashtra on this matter.
  • Same was the case with other states including Telangana and Karnataka.
  • In 2019, the West Bengal government took away the Governor’s this authority.
  • Punchhi Commission in 2007 also recommended this.
