  • Recently, National Centre of Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR) has observed the largest decline in the Arctic Sea ice in the last 41 years.
  • Sea ice covers about 7% of the Earth's surface and about 12% of the world's oceans.
  • NCPOR was established as an autonomous Research and Development Institution of the Ministry of Earth Sciences in 1998.
  • It is located in Goa.
  • NCPOR is India’s premier R&D institution responsible for the country’s research activities in the Polar and Southern Ocean regions.
  • The Arctic Sea is located in the Arctic North Polar Region in the middle of the Northern Hemisphere.
  • The Arctic Ocean is the smallest and shallowest of the world's five major oceans and it is also known as the coldest of all the oceans.
