The Tamil Nadu government has reconstituted its Backward Classes Commission.
Retired Justice R Thanikachalam will head the Commission now.
It is for examining requests of inclusion and complaints of over-inclusion or non-inclusion in the list of Other Backward Classes (OBC).
Background
The first Backward Classes Commission in Tamil Nadu was formed on November 13, 1969 when the DMK was in power.
It was known as Sattanathan Commission.
Sattanathan Commission recommended the introduction of "Creamy Layer" among the OBC in the state.
In pursuance of the direction of the Supreme Court in the Mandal Commission cases or Indira Sawhney cases in 1992, the State government had constituted a permanent Tamil Nadu Backward Classes Commission.
It was formed under the Chairmanship of retired Justice K Shanmugam 1993.
It is formed under Article 16(4) read with Article 340 of the Constitution of India.
